Notes: The "origin" of Buck Private O'Toole . Korean War G.I. Timothy O'Toole (along with his pals Dave Greenberg and Ham Johnson) apparently appeared in several issues of Battle before fading away; at the end of the story, we are promised "More of Buck Private O'Toole's Amazing Adventures in the next issue of Battle Comics". This character is played lighter, more for laughs, like Devil Dog Dugan five years later. Much of the action involves O'Toole chasing pretty war correspondent Jean Cooley of the Post-Telegram. |

Notes: A Korean War Air Force story. It is narrated by a "Lt. Hart" who related it "when the war correspondent for Battle Magazine came to our base in Korea". The story is said to have taken place on "April 3, 1950" which really must have kicked up quite an international incident, as the north didn't invade the south until 25 June that year! The splash is signed "Allen Bellman" and "As told to Hank Chapman". I found myself wondering if Lt. Hart's first name (never given) was Ernie ... - Tom Lammers. |
