- Wessler was the first person the Fleischer Studio fired (in March 30 1937) for his pro-union activities. (interestingly two weeks later the US Supreme Court ruled firing someone for their pro-union activities to be illegeal). On May 7th, there was a strike at Fleischer studio lasting untill October 13, at which time Fleischer re-hired Wessler (and others) and settled. shortly after that, Fleischer announced plans to move the studio to Florida (a right-to-work state), which they did in 1938. Wessler remained with Fleischer up to their return to NYC (as Famous) in 1943. It was in 1943 while in Florida, that he begain work in comic books - through Jay Morton for the Sangor-Hughes shop. Many of the returning Famous guys went from animation work for full time comic book work when they returned, becasue in the 1940s, comic book work paid more than animation work! I dont know when Wessler switched over, but it seems likely he did at about the same time. When Timely-Atlas went under in 1957, he switched to writing for Harvey - where he stayed untill they early 1970s - when he ended his career writing mystery stories at DC. steven rowe
